Keep Drifting Fun

Posted on May 18, 2012 by Dave

Keep Drifting Fun is a really dope short form documentary on the culture of American drifting. It features some of the homies from Clubloose in New Jersey. It reminds me of skateboard and bmx videos from when I was a young buck. If you’re into acting a fool, adrenaline and action sports you won’t be disappointed in this gem. Keep Drifting Fun is a classic action sports video and if you don’t want to do burn-outs and doughnuts after you watch it you don’t have a pulse. (repost from Keep Drifting Fun)

In 2010 we crisscrossed the USA interviewing drivers and covering grassroots drifting events. We wanted to know why people choose to drift, how they got into the sport, and why the love it. The answer is simple, its fun. In fact, its the most fun you can have with a car. Once you do it, you’re hooked and for children of the action sports era – its easy to understand being subjective and judged. In this short form documentary, we visit some of the most vibrant and passionate drifting communities in the US. We talk with up and coming amateur drivers and pro drifters about the sport and why Keep Drifting Fun is more than just a motto – it has changed their lives.

Five months into twenty-twelve and Aeon’s Flight has finally accomplished something noteworthy. My titled quest was designed to bring depth to my writing, and this piece marks my effort. Over a month ago I began plotting a trilogy, a three-part blog utilizing a trio of films to discuss an epiphany. It all started with Open the Gates. Employing The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, it posited the belief in a grand dichotomy, and spoke of it in terms of Imagination Vs Fear. Next up was The Sleeper Must Awaken, (centering on Dune). Therein the discussion was advanced, and the importance of self-awareness was highlighted.

These axioms can also be found within the movie The Fifth Element. Beginning at the turn of the twentieth century, the first scene see’s an archeologist in Egypt making an incredible discovery. Before a wall of runes he learns from an ancient faith: every 5000 years a Great Evil comes to destroy the earth, and the Good arises from its slumber to fight it. Nearly 500 years later the sleeper is awakened, and her name is Leeloo. She’s a divine being from a time before time, dropped into rush hour and forced to learn quickly.

In studying the entirety of human history she is presented with a predicament; that which she was sent to protect seeks to destroy itself. Self-awareness occurs afterwards, and she begins to see her inability to save humanity despite being created to do so.

Success cannot be stimulated without reason. Clarity needs to be constructed in order to realize why it is we must do something. Reflecting upon the Munchausen discoveries made in part one, we must first imagine a better reality in order to overcome the fear that we cannot create one.  Then, as part two suggests, we’ve got to dig a little deeper like Paul Atreides in Dune. Search our souls and find the elements needed to realize that which we’ve imagined.

Four in fact: honesty, integrity, patience, and dignity. Attributes difficult to acquire, hard to adhere to, but ultimately they are priceless. However, personal discoveries can only take one so far. Like Leeloo before the apocalypse, salvation isn’t earned alone. In the film it comes at the confession of her companion. The Good defeats Evil because a man admits he loves a woman. To many this seems foolish, that the fifth element ensuring eternity would be something as sappy as love. At different times the film’s director has confessed it could also be life or even sex. This is understandable as sex creates life… but it does not protect it.

Thus, I conclude this trilogy with a confession of my own. Sap sticks and sits below the surface we all hide behind. It holds the globe together, as well as all of us. The world is six billion hearts beating for a reason. My own finds inspiration in the rhythm of another’s.

The Age of Heroes

Posted on by jongodfrey

Hesiod, in his classic tome Works and Days, divided the history of humanity into five ages. Comic book culture adopted this structure in order to categorize the years leading up to the present. The super powered people drawn by Detective Comics led the Golden Age. The freaks and geeks of Marvel Comics brought about the Silver Age. Thereafter the two sides battled for supremacy throughout the Bronze Age. Then darkness dawned in the mid-eighties with the rise of the anti-hero and other aggrandized villainy. They call this period “Modernity,” but considering the hopelessness attributed to the here-and-now it is evident that an Age of Heroes is needed.

Rosy fingered Dawn met these demands on May 4th with the release of The Avengers. Once upon a time the cinematic sphere permitted residence to independent heroes only. The idea of a team of super-powered individuals was preposterous. Suffice it to say the naysayers were wrong, and their misunderstanding of power was their downfall.

And so the Age of Heroes begins with a power play. At the core of Joss Whedon’s passion project are the questions, “what is power?” And more importantly, “how is it to be used?” Every character within the drama is equipped with an incredible amount of power, and in turn, they are presented with the difficulties inherent in handling such. On one side there are those who feel it is evidence of superiority, and justification for suppression. On the other are those who feel obliged to sacrifice these gifts for the sake of those without. It’s a timeless juxtaposition, and in a sense redundant when the contrast is two-fold. However, the arena this time around is a battleground. Meaning, the epiphanies are eclectic instead of singular. Evil in its various forms learns no lessons, for even in defeat they refuse to see the error of their ways. Stubborn adherence to one’s principles is their folly.

The Avengers are awakened to the error of their ways with the enemy at the gates. Independently they see that their isolated outlook is insufficient. Power alone is not enough. The collection of cooperative and supporting traits provides power with the right direction and effective application. Thus, by uniting their efforts they find the success no one in this power play could find alone. Furthermore, the fact their union focuses on protection instead of oppression aids this union with integrity, a bond not easily broken.

In the end power is the ability to affect an outcome, and it is best used together. The Age of Heroes has begun, and it’s being led by men and women willing to use their power for good.

My Life at the Movies set sail in late 2010 without a course. However, I broached this bedlam by creating my version of the Oscars. The Golden Babies afforded me direction, and showed readers what movies mattered to me. In 2011 I adjusted my bearings and embarked upon The Race to 100. In twelve months I saw 100 films in theaters and was enriched by the endeavor. This year I spun the helm again and boarded Aeon’s Flight.

Aeon = Plato’s understanding of the Eternal World; a place beyond heaven; the truth existing off the screen.

Flight = how this elevates my writing. Meaning, this year I intend to expand upon the insight each movie inspires.

The altitude increased with, “Open the Gates.” As the first part of a trilogy it introduced the idea that life is a battle between imagination and fear, and employed “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen” to illustrate this. This week let’s reach higher by digging deeper with Dune. This sci-fi bildungsroman centers on Paul Atreides. Upon sacrificing spoils for struggle his father explains that without such dramatic change something sleeps within.

This axiom rings true in this reality as well. Most of the time we are so concerned with comfort we fail to experience the growth afforded by entertaining its opposite. By rejecting any/all radical change our potential slowly rots. Instead, by accepting it as an advisor we start to see sides of us hitherto concealed. Such sites can be jarring at first, and like Paul in the film we must face these fears to further progress. It will be uncomfortable, painful even, but the end result is unparalleled. This aftermath is known as “self-awareness,” and it is more than simple sentience. It is the ability to recognize exactly what sleeps within, and how to awaken it in turn.

Though this arousal will not equate to godhood like it did for the young Atreides, it will nevertheless afford one with depth beyond belief. Human beings are typically superficial, but what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul? By following the internal quest recommended above we learn that wisdom is worth more than silver and gold. Yet, as previously posited such wisdom does not deify the individual, rather, it enhances humanity and enlightens the spirit. That said, there is a way to rise above even heights as formidable as these. To learn more stay tuned for conclusion.
